SOUTHERN LIVING—Jesse Barber focuses his camera with the quiet pensiveness of a mountain man—someone who appreciates the solace of a porch rocker, the depth of a Blue Ridge vista. A Morganton resident, Barber has lived his whole life in the Western North Carolina mountains and foothills. He knows the terrain, and has made capturing the rural way of life his focus as a documentary photographer, who completed his undergrad in Documentary Studies at Appalachian State University, and a masters in Appalachian Studies there this past spring. But nothing prepared him for covering Helene.
