BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University’s Center for Appalachian Studies and Department of Interdisciplinary Studies will present the Mountain Mondays Speaker Series, a virtual series featuring scholars and community practitioners in the humanities and social sciences whose work explores mountains and mountain communities around the world.
Formerly the International Mountain Studies Conference, Mountain Mondays will take place via Zoom each Monday from Oct. 12 through Nov. 23. Session times vary by date. The series is free and open to the public with advance registration.
Presentations will highlight the growing academic field of mountain studies and encourage comparative studies of and exchanges between the Appalachian Mountains and other mountain regions around the world. Topics range from health in Appalachia and Haiti and art collaborations between Appalachia and the Carpathians to music in the Slovak Tatra Mountains and Austrian Alps, mountain traditions in Vietnam and the Zagros Mountains, and the impacts of Hurricane Helene. Other presentations explore Appalachian history, culture, agriculture, literature, tourism, and environmental issues.
